Yes, watching football can be a great way to improve your English! But how? And why football specifically?
The Authenticity of Live Commentary
Well, football, just like many other sports, often includes live commentary. You could be watching an England vs Germany match from your living room and learning at the same time. Live commentary is rich with authentic vocabulary, comprised of idioms, phrases and superlatives. Think about it, how many times in a football game do you hear "he shoots!", "she scores!" or "that was the slowest game I've ever watched"? The list of examples is endless and so are the opportunities to learn not only new vocabulary but grammatical structures too!
Engaging Content = More Motivation to Learn!
Ask most teachers of languages and they will tell you that motivation is key!
We know that sports are an excellent way to keep people excited and engaged, so why not combine language learning with it?
Sports Reflect Culture!
Finally, national identity and sports often go hand in hand. When you're watching an England game you often see advertisements for British beers and rowdy fans painted in red and white. And on the off chance that England win a match, you're guaranteed to hear Sweet Caroline blasted around the stadium. (By the way, Sweet Caroline is a British pub classic). By exposing yourself to a culture, you're bettering your understanding of your target language.
Thank you for taking the time to read and I wish you the best of luck with your language learning!
