Stop seeing AI as your enemy! Yes, I'm talking directly to you. I've heard from both teachers and students that AI isn't as good as the real thing (the real thing being the teacher) and I totally agree. I still believe a conversation with a native speaker is invaluable. However, I do believe that it would be extremely short sighted to ignore the benefits that AI brings.

So, what are the benefits AI brings? And how can we use those benefits to our advantage? Let me explain.

1. Realistic Conversation Practice

As a teacher, I have spoken to hundreds of students who have a fear of speaking in their target languages. It's understandable. Using a foreign language with native speakers can be tough and most people don't enjoy making mistakes. This is where AI can help.

AI can give you 24/7 access to a speaker of your target language. You can tell the AI bot your desired topic of discussion and your current level. The bot will then speak to you while catering to your wishes. It truly helps!

Of course, I would never tell you to solely learn with an AI bot. I still believe that the beauty of learning a language is to communicate with your fellow humans. From my own experience of learning several languages, I've always found sites such as ChatGPT to be wonderful for allowing me to practice and break down tricky structures. You can ask ChatGPT to provide translations and explanations into your native language along with a sentence below in your target language. It really is a game changer.

There are thousands of AI apps in 2025 and there'll be many more in 2026, all competing with each other to grab your attention. What's great about this is that you will certainly find apps with lucrative prices!
